Thanks for the comment John!

I should have paced them out better these balks are closer to 35' long and more like 18" thick which would make them more than 2 tons if neutrally buoyant.

FWIW According to this cool site:
"http://www.allhandsondeck.org/building/lesson4_home.php" a naval cannon in the 19th century weighed around 230 lbs/lb of shot so an 18 pounder weighed two tons.

KJ
P.S. Susie says 'Hi' and made me promise to mention her occasionally for you :-)

Hi KJ, thanks for your very interesting and well done blog and pictures. I think that the 15 March entry regarding the lumber has a glitch. The lumber floated and hence weighed bit less than 64 lbs/cubic foot (density seawater). If these guys were 20' x 18" x 12" they have 30 cubic foot of wood. This means they can't weigh more than 1800 pounds, bit less than one ton. Other than that one nit, nothing else to pick! Keep up the good work, say "Hi!" to Susie for me, best, John R

ahoy matey, glad to hear you made it ok through your first gale storm. High seas test your navy legs and stomach that's for sure. Hope you have a chance to experience a bit of Morocco, perhaps a guided visit into one of the old medinas to see if you can barter for exotic treasures at the market? just remember if you hear them yell PALAK (donkey), to clear the aisle ASAP as there's a big load coming thru. take care! It had better be!

Although... I'm very glad I did not know about the 19-20 foot waves while you were in them!

Hi

I came across your post on a google alert.

Thought you might like to know the wrecked ship is quite recent. It is/ was the M/V Fedra, a Liberian-registered bulk-carrier cargo ship. It ran aground and smashed against Europa Point, the southernmost tip of Gibraltar on 10 October 2008 following severe gale force winds measuring 12 on the Beaufort scale... a touch more than the force 5 you experienced!

You can read all about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Fedra

Oh... and the bay where HMS Victory was docked (and Nelson's pickled body landed) after Trafalgar, is called Rosia Bay!

Hope you enjoyed your visit to Gibraltar, despite the wig threatening winds... come again soon! :)

Saludos!
